For nearly ten years, Cabo Private Guide PADI 5 Star Dive Center has been helping divers take the next step in their diving journey. We decided to take the next natural step and create Pro Dive Academy Cabo, our dedicated PADI Instructor Development Center, where professional-level training is led by expert PADI Course Director Martin Mendez.
Over the years, we’ve worked with Divemaster candidates and dive leaders from a wide range of backgrounds, helping them build confidence, develop professional-level skills, and prepare for careers in the diving industry. As our dive center has grown, so has our ability to support divers pursuing higher professional ratings.
We’re excited to now offer PADI Instructor Development Courses (IDCs), bringing the same personalized approach and commitment to quality training that has been the foundation of our professional programs since the beginning.
As a small boutique training centre, we believe that professional education should be personal. Smaller groups, individual attention, and real-world experience are at the heart of how we teach. When combined with the unique diving environment of Cabo San Lucas, we believe this creates an exceptional place to begin your journey as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
So what makes Cabo such a great place to complete your PADI Instructor Development Course?

Learn in Real Course Conditions
Some instructor candidates complete their IDC in destinations where teaching students to dive feels almost effortless. Backpacker locations in crystal-clear water, no current and perfect visibility certainly make for a great classroom. But they don’t always prepare instructors for the wide variety of conditions they’ll encounter if they want to travel, especially the Eastern Pacific Coast!
Cabo offers something much more valuable. Here you’ll learn to teach in conditions that closely resemble those found throughout North America. Visibility varies, currents change, surge is common on some sites, and water temperatures fluctuate throughout the year. Learning to manage these conditions during your Instructor Development Course helps you become a more adaptable, confident and capable dive professional.
By the time you complete your PADI Instructor Examination (IE), you’ll have developed practical teaching skills that translate well whether you plan to work in Mexico, the United States, Canada or many other destinations around the world.

Personalised Training Makes Better Instructors
One of the biggest differences you’ll notice at Pro Dive Academy Cabo is the size of our classes.
Many larger IDC centres run courses with dozens of candidates at once. While these programs certainly produce instructors, it can sometimes be difficult to receive the individual coaching needed to refine your teaching style.
We like to keep our PADI IDC groups smaller than the huge classes in some ‘dive factory’ locations. We add Staff Instructors to help reduce pro:student ratios when classes occasionally grow to larger sizes.
This allows our PADI Course Director to understand your strengths, identify areas for improvement and coach you individually throughout the course. Every presentation, confined water workshop and open water teaching exercise becomes an opportunity for personalised feedback rather than simply checking off another requirement.
Our goal isn’t simply to help you pass the Instructor Examination. It’s to help you become the kind of instructor that students remember for years.

Expert Mentorship Beyond the Standards
The PADI Instructor Development Course follows a globally standardised curriculum, but every Course Director brings their own experience to the program.
With years of professional teaching experience across recreational diver training, professional development and dive operations, Martin focuses on preparing candidates for real-life teaching—not just examination scenarios. Martin is from Argentina, and teaches fluently in English and Spanish.
Throughout your IDC you’ll discuss risk management, customer care, student psychology, and the day-to-day realities of working as a professional instructor. You will be introcuded to PADI Standards and guided through the instructor manual, building on your Divemaster experience in the water.
Lessons aren’t always found in manuals, but having an expert mentor communicate these standards fully will make an enormous difference once you begin your diving career.

Cabo Offers Incredible Variety
Few destinations provide such a diverse classroom.
We have both warm water and cold water seasons. If you are coming to do both your Divemaster and IDC here, you can select the season that suits the environment where you will teach. We find a lot of warm-water instructors come to Cabo looking for work, having never really taught students in thick suits! It changes everything. So be the best version of an instructor you can – teach in harder conditions from the get-go.
The changing environment encourages flexibility—an important quality for every new instructor.
Teaching in different conditions also helps build confidence, making you comfortable adapting lessons to suit different students, dive sites and weather conditions.
And did you know? Whales and certain shark species we love to encounter in the Sea of Cortez, actually prefer the colder water seasons!

Easy to Reach, Easy to Live
For many candidates searching for a PADI IDC in Mexico, location matters.
Cabo San Lucas is just a short flight from many cities across the western United States and Canada, making travel straightforward and often surprisingly affordable.
The town itself has excellent infrastructure, modern healthcare, reliable internet, comfortable accommodation and everything you’ll need during your Instructor Development Course.
Unlike some remote island destinations, you’ll enjoy all the conveniences of a modern town while still spending every day surrounded by the ocean.

Dream it. Live it.
At Pro Dive Academy Cabo, we don’t see candidates as course numbers.
We take the time to get to know every future instructor, understand their career goals and provide honest guidance throughout their professional journey. Whether you dream of teaching locally, travelling the world as a scuba instructor or continuing towards specialties, eco-focused diving or even becoming a Course Director one day, we want to help build a strong foundation.
Our commitment doesn’t end when the IDC finishes. We aim to become part of your professional network for years to come.
