Kids Activities in Cabo: Scuba Diving, Snorkeling & Family Ocean Adventures

Finding great kids activities in Cabo San Lucas can get surprisingly complicated when you’re traveling as a family.
Your teenager wants an adventure. Your ten-year-old desperately wants to try scuba diving. Your six-year-old is a confident swimmer but obviously too young to dive. Mum or Dad might already be a certified diver — and somehow you’re supposed to find one activity that keeps everybody happy.
That’s exactly why we love introducing families to Cabo from the water.
At Cabo Private Guide, we’re a PADI 5 Star IDC Center and boutique dive operation specializing in small groups and private experiences. Instead of expecting every member of the family to do exactly the same thing, we can create an ocean adventure around your children, their ages and their confidence in the water.
Whether that means snorkeling with their own guide, trying scuba diving for the first time, completing a PADI kids program in the pool or even starting a real scuba certification, there are some fantastic options for young adventurers in Cabo.
Here are three of our favorites.
1. Family Snorkeling & Scuba Diving on Your Own Private Boat
Best for: Families with children of different ages
If you’re looking for an activity the whole family can enjoy together in Cabo, this is probably our favorite option.
Charter one of our private boats and we can combine certified scuba divers, first-time divers, snorkelers and family members who simply want to enjoy the boat.
For children aged 10 and over, we can arrange a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience for those who are ready to try scuba.
For younger children, we can provide a private snorkeling guide so they get their own underwater adventure while the older members of the family dive.
And nobody gets left behind.
Perhaps Dad and a teenage daughter are already certified divers. Their 11-year-old wants to try scuba for the first time, while the six-year-old just wants to put on a mask and look for fish.
That’s absolutely fine.
One boat. One family. Completely different adventures.

A Private Snorkeling Guide for Younger Children
Having their own snorkeling guide can make a huge difference to younger kids.
Instead of joining a large snorkeling group and trying to keep up with adults, children can explore at their own pace with somebody right beside them.
Our guide can help them with their mask and snorkel, stay alongside them in the water and point out the marine life hiding beneath the surface.
And Cabo has plenty to discover.
The reefs around Cabo San Lucas are home to tropical fish, pufferfish, rays, moray eels and countless other species. Depending on the season and a little bit of luck, there may be much larger visitors around too.
If your child has had enough after twenty minutes?
They can simply climb back onto the boat.
It’s your boat.
That’s one of the biggest advantages of choosing a private family experience rather than a large group excursion.

Kids 10+ Can Try Scuba Diving
From age ten, children can participate in PADI Discover Scuba Diving.
No previous scuba certification is required.
Before entering the ocean, they’ll learn some basic scuba concepts and practice important skills with a PADI Instructor. Once they’re comfortable, they can experience what it’s really like to breathe and explore underwater.
For many children, that first dive is unforgettable.
They’re not looking through the glass of an aquarium anymore.
They’re inside it.
And because we’re operating privately, the experience can be adapted around the family rather than around a boat full of unrelated guests.

Our Affordable Afternoon Private Boat
A private boat in Cabo doesn’t necessarily have to mean luxury-yacht prices.
Our discounted PM private boat is available year-round, making a private ocean experience much more accessible for families.
We can add certified divers, beginner divers, snorkelers and passengers according to the makeup of your group, with additional professional supervision arranged where required.
That makes it a particularly good option for families who would otherwise need to book several different excursions.

2. Kids’ Pool Scuba Experiences: Bubblemaker & PADI Seal Team

Best for: Ages 8–12
Not every child’s first scuba experience needs to involve the ocean.
In fact, for younger children, a swimming pool can be the perfect place to begin.
PADI has two programs specifically designed to introduce children from eight years old to scuba diving: PADI Bubblemaker and PADI Seal Team.
Although children can technically begin these programs from age eight, we particularly love them for the 8–12 age group because they provide the excitement of real scuba equipment in a controlled environment.
PADI Bubblemaker — Their First Breath Underwater
The name says it all.
Bubblemaker is designed to be fun.
Children aged eight and over get to use real scuba equipment and discover the rather magical feeling of breathing underwater.
The experience takes place in shallow confined water, with a maximum depth of just 2 metres/6 feet.
There is no pressure to “become a diver.”
It’s simply an opportunity to try something completely new.
Some kids are immediately fearless. Others spend the first few minutes looking suspiciously at their regulator before eventually deciding to give it a try.
Both are completely normal.
We believe that when children are learning to scuba dive, confidence matters much more than speed.
The objective isn’t to see how quickly we can get a child underwater.
It’s to make sure they come out smiling.
PADI Seal Team — Scuba Diving Becomes a Mission
For children who want more than a one-off Bubblemaker experience, PADI Seal Team takes pool scuba to another level.
Instead of simply trying the equipment, young divers complete a series of underwater AquaMissions.
They begin developing genuine scuba skills while completing underwater challenges and activities.
The first five AquaMissions lead to becoming an official PADI Seal Team member, and children who really get hooked can continue with additional specialty AquaMissions toward Master Seal Team.
It’s structured learning — but from a child’s point of view, it feels much more like an underwater adventure.
That’s exactly how we like it.
For families spending several days or weeks in Cabo, Seal Team can also be a fantastic vacation activity because children aren’t simply entertained for an afternoon.
They’re learning something.
And for an eight or nine-year-old who dreams about becoming a scuba diver, it gives them a way to start developing underwater confidence before they’re old enough to begin their junior certification.

3. PADI Scuba Courses for Kids & Teenagers
Best for: Ages 10+ who are ready for a bigger adventure
Once children reach ten, the scuba world becomes considerably bigger.
They can experience their first open-water dive through PADI Discover Scuba Diving, or they can begin working toward an actual PADI scuba certification.
For families spending their vacation in Cabo, there are several ways to approach this.
Discover Scuba Diving — Try It First
If your child has never scuba dived before, PADI Discover Scuba Diving is often the perfect starting point.
It’s an experience rather than a certification course.
Children learn the essential safety information, become familiar with their scuba equipment, practice some basic skills and — when they’re comfortable and conditions are appropriate — head into the ocean with a PADI Professional.
For a ten-year-old, that’s a pretty serious vacation story to take home.
And if they finish the dive declaring that scuba is now their favorite thing in the entire world?
There are options
PADI Scuba Diver — Become a Certified Diver
For kids and teenagers who want an actual scuba qualification but don’t have time to complete the full Open Water Diver course, PADI Scuba Diver can be an excellent alternative.
The PADI Scuba Diver course is a subset of the full Open Water Diver program.
Once certified, PADI Scuba Divers can dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres/40 feet under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional.
The certification can later be upgraded to PADI Open Water Diver by completing the remaining training.
For a young diver, that can make a lot of sense.
They receive a genuine PADI certification and develop real diving skills, while continuing to dive under professional supervision.
Kids Scuba Vacation Camps in Cabo
For children who really love the ocean, we can go even further.
Cabo Private Guide offers Kids Scuba Diving Vacation Camps, combining scuba training with the experience of spending their vacation learning about the underwater world.
Rather than simply filling a child’s vacation schedule with activities, a scuba camp gives them something tangible to work toward.
They’re developing confidence.
They’re learning responsibility.
They’re understanding scuba equipment and underwater communication.
They’re discovering marine life.
And potentially, they’re leaving Cabo with a new qualification and a hobby they can enjoy around the world.

Is My Child Ready to Try Scuba Diving?
Age is only part of the answer.
Two children of exactly the same age can react completely differently to scuba diving.
One eight-year-old may jump straight into the pool and immediately want to know when they can go deeper.
Another may be a fantastic swimmer but feel uncomfortable breathing through a regulator.
We don’t think either child should be pushed.
Children need to be comfortable in the water, able to listen to instructions and genuinely interested in participating.
That’s also one of the reasons we specialize in private and small-group experiences.
An instructor has time to talk to your child, understand how they’re feeling and let the experience develop at the right pace.
Sometimes the biggest achievement isn’t reaching the bottom of the pool.
It’s the nervous child who finally puts their face underwater, takes a breath from their regulator and comes back up with an enormous smile.
Why Cabo Is Such a Great Place for Kids to Discover the Ocean
Cabo San Lucas gives families access to an extraordinary amount of marine life without having to travel hours offshore.
The protected waters around the Cabo San Lucas Marine Reserve provide opportunities for snorkeling and diving remarkably close to the marina.
And there’s always an element of surprise.
One day it might be rays.
Another day it’s huge schools of fish.
You may find sea lions, turtles or some particularly photogenic pufferfish.
During whale season, divers and snorkelers may even hear humpback whale songs travelling through the water.
That’s something no swimming pool can reproduce.
A Family Vacation They Might Actually Remember
There are plenty of things to do with kids in Cabo.
Pools. Beaches. Resorts. Boat trips.
But learning to breathe underwater is different.
An eight-year-old can come home talking about their first Bubblemaker experience.
A ten-year-old can tell their friends they went scuba diving in Mexico.
A teenager might leave Cabo as a certified diver.
And families with children of completely different ages can spend an afternoon together on a private boat instead of splitting into separate excursions.
At Cabo Private Guide, our job isn’t simply to take children scuba diving.
It’s to introduce them to the ocean safely, patiently and in a way that makes them want to come back.
So tell us the ages of your children, their swimming ability and what everyone in the family would love to experience.
We’ll help you choose between private family snorkeling and diving, Bubblemaker, PADI Seal Team, Discover Scuba Diving or a junior scuba certification.
Because sometimes the best kids’ activity in Cabo isn’t really a kids’ activity at all.
It’s the beginning of a lifelong love of the ocean.
